It’s a new year!

January 20th, 2010 by Kelsi

It’s about time somebody updated this thing!

Let’s start off 2010 real smoooooth.

The weather’s been wonderful lately, so unless you’ve had an unnecessary organ removed, and you’re not allowed to ride until Monday, you can still have fun on wheels.  In fact, as I had gone early this morning to get to the ARC for Cycle Aerobics, I saw that one of the student workers at the ARC had,  in the lovely calm of a 5AM flurry, ridden his bike there.  I smiled.  There really is hope in the world.

And if you’re looking to get into riding shape, even if you’re not serious about riding, but you want to commute without feeling it afterwards, try Cycle Aerobics.  There’s a new time at 6 O’clock AM on Mondays and Wednesdays.  There’ll be plenty of flyers around with the new schedule.

Library Bikes are ready to roll.  The Semester Loan Bikes are even better.  Go get one!

By the by, there’s a meeting tomorrow night somewhere in the ARC at 7.  See you there!

Green Fund Grants Approved: Green Bike Init. Awarded $5,748

March 28th, 2009 by kopko

The Green Bike Initiative was awarded the full requested amount for their grant proposal to the Green Fund Advisory Board for Expansion of Green Bike Initiative, Student Outreach, Cycling Infrastructure, and Practical Art. Click here for a listing of approved grants.

Through this grant 10 bicycles, locks and accessories will be purchased for students to borrow for a semester long time period. The students will be given bicycle maintenance training and will be responsible for general care of the bicycles. Surveys will be completed to generate data pertaining to students commuting by bicycle as well as routes commonly used on campus and throughout the community of Slippery Rock.

The rest of the grant monies will be used to fabricate and powdercoat 5 bicycle racks in conjunction with the SRU Art Department and art students. The racks will be constructed from reclaimed bicycle frames that are no longer useful. The racks will be more than a place to lock your bike, they will also be tastefully designed and practical.

Stay tuned for updates on the Completion of the Grant.

Pittsburgh 250: Making the Connection

December 17th, 2008 by kopko

Dan Wilson, Steve Roberts and Alex Kopko were lucky enough to attend this event at the Carnegie Science center on December 15, to meet with other grant recipients and hear their stories of success as well as share ours.  Steve Roberts spoke during the 251 portion of the forum which was about different organizations and how they will be making even more progress in the 251st anniversary.  There were several Panel Discussions as well as questions and the whole event ended with an excellent reception where we had a chance to talk to other grant awardees and volunteers and listen to a live band – the Newlanders.

We look forward to the possibility of continued support from the Sprout Fund in 2009 and are gracious for their support in 2008.  A great timewas had by all during the event and reception.

If you are looking for transportation, please check the sidebar under Adopt A Bike for update photos of bicycles looking to be ridden.

I would also like to thank everyone who has helped with the Green Bike Initiative in the past year, whether they rode a bike across campus, spread the word, helped paint bikes green, or participated in the parts parties, etc.  Everyone that has volunteered their time or efforts will not be forgotten.  Thanks for a great 2008, here’s to an even better 2009!

Green Bikes at Bailey Library

October 29th, 2008 by kopko

We have collaborated with the wonderful staff at the Bailey Library to develop a borrowing system for some of the newer greenbikes we have recieved through a grant!

Here’s how it works:

  1. You go into the library
  2. Ask one of the good looking attendants at the circulation desk to borrow a green bike.
  3. They ask for your library card (student ID)
  4. You fork it over
  5. They scan it
  6. They give you a key which matches one of bike’s lock
  7. You unlock the bike and ride away, with the wind blowing in your hair.
  8. You ride the bike to the grocery store, your friend’s house, a party, who knows where you will go on two wheels.
  9. You are responsible for the bike for the time you have it locking it up when you reach your destination.
  10. You bring it back and lock it in front of the library within three days.
  11. or you can renew the bike just like a book.
  12. You take the key inside and give it back to the circulation desk.
  13. We hope you had a good bike borrowing experience.
